Can you get life insurance without a Social Security number?

You can apply. Here is what is normally required, and why which company you apply to is the part that decides it.

Yes. It is one of the most common questions we get and one of the worst answered online.

Several insurance companies in the United States accept applications from people who do not have a Social Security number. What they generally ask for is your ITIN and a valid photo ID.

What is normally required

In most cases it is two things: the ITIN, the taxpayer identification number issued by the IRS, and a photo identification.

From there the application follows the same path as any other. You will be asked your age, your height and weight, whether you use tobacco, your medical history and your medications, exactly as anyone else would be. Those questions do not change, and they have to be answered accurately, because they are part of the contract.

What varies by company

Not every insurer has the same policy, and that is the part that decides the outcome.

Some companies accept an ITIN without difficulty. Others ask for additional documentation, or apply their own rules based on how long you have been living in the United States, or based on the product. And some simply do not accept applications without a Social Security number.

So the useful question is not whether it is possible but at which company. Knowing which insurers accept your situation, before an application is submitted, is the difference between an approval and a decline that goes on record.

Elavere works with several companies that accept applications with an ITIN. Which ones, and what each requires, is something Victor will tell you directly on the call, because these rules change and we would rather you did not make a decision on out-of-date information.

What this does not change

Worth saying plainly, because there is a lot of bad information circulating.

Life insurance is a contract between you and an insurance company. It is not an immigration filing, it does not report you to any agency, and it does not change your legal situation in any way. It is also not a different or more expensive product because you are paying with an ITIN. If you qualify, the price is calculated the same way it is for anyone else, from your age, your health and the coverage you choose.

Everything else stays the same too. You name a beneficiary, which can be your spouse, your children or someone else. You answer the health questions accurately. And coverage is not in force until the company approves the application and the first premium is paid.

If you have questions about who you can name as a beneficiary, or how the benefit is paid, ask them on the call. They are ordinary questions and they all have answers.

Why this matters

A life insurance policy exists so that if you are gone, your family does not lose the house or have to raise money for a funeral in the worst week of their lives.

That need does not depend on which documents you hold. The only thing that differs is which companies will open the door, and that is something a fifteen minute conversation can settle.

Who you would be talking to

Elavere Life & Retirement is an independent agency. Victor M Robles Soto is a licensed insurance producer who works with eleven insurance companies rather than one. He is a native Spanish speaker, and the entire conversation is available in Spanish.

There is no cost to ask, no obligation, and you do not need to hand over any document to ask a question.

Further reading from the regulator: the Texas Department of Insurance publishes a consumer life insurance guide covering policy types, underwriting and what moves the price.

Common questions

Can I get life insurance in the United States without a Social Security number?

Yes. Several companies accept applications with an ITIN and a valid photo ID. Exact requirements vary by company.

What documents do I need to apply with an ITIN?

Generally the ITIN number and a photo identification. Some companies request additional documentation depending on your situation and the product.

Does life insurance cost more if I apply with an ITIN?

Not for that reason. The price is calculated the same as for anyone else, from your age, tobacco use, health class, term length and coverage amount.

Does applying for life insurance affect my immigration situation?

No. Life insurance is a contract with an insurance company, not an immigration filing.

Who can I name as a beneficiary?

Typically your spouse, your children or another person you choose. If you are unsure about your situation, ask before signing the application.
